Turns out, they weren't. The peppers were larger and milder than a true Datil, though still \u003c\/span\u003every, very hot.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"isSelectedEnd\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eSince we don't know what the heck they actually are, we're calling them \u003c\/span\u003eDitil Datil\u003cspan\u003e (pronounced “Diddle Daddle”). We still love them, even if they're not the OG Florida Datil.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"isSelectedEnd\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe plants get big, about 4–5 feet tall and are loaded with peppers. They're very productive, and have great flavor, if you can handle the heat.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"isSelectedEnd\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eWe thought they were fabulous, but some die-hard Datil fans aren't convinced. It grows with very little care, all through our brutal Florida summers. They may even be perennial, if winters are mild enough. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis particular version of Tabasco pepper came from Shiloh, where it grew for years after the death of its caregiver, Bedie Rogers. Jerome Feaster kept it growing in front of the steps of the McIntosh Hardware Store for years. We snagged a few seeds from Jerome's plants many years ago to increase the seed availability.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSo hot! Great for drying and of course making hot sauce.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMr. Vernon, one of our favorite Grow Hubbers (pictured here) loves to harvest and take them home for his mamma to make hot sauce. So get your pepper preserving recipes handy, you'll have lots!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFrom our field notes: \"\u003cem\u003eWe are losing our summer gardening enthusiasm as it gets hotter and we really want to wind things down, but these plants are still cranking and we can't keep up anymore\u003c\/em\u003e!\".\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eUnlike most sweet peppers that are of the \u003cem\u003eCapsicum annuum\u003c\/em\u003e species, these ones will do very well in our hot and humid climate, but will start producing later in the spring, summer, and even fall depending on their health and when they were planted.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLots of small UFO, star-fish like shaped fruits that on occasion were a tad hot near the white inner flesh but mostly nice and sweet, and those are the only ones we saved seeds from. But on occasion you may get a surprise :)\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDoug Jones is a farmer and pepper breeder in North Carolina and he gave us these seeds several years ago when Melissa was at the Carolina Farm Stewardship's Sustainable Agriculture Conference in Durham, North Carolina, and visited his farm. Doug has been working on this variety for awhile, breeding out the heat and adapting them for hot and humid southeastern summers.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSome folks looking at them say they look more like the Mad Hatter type, which indeed they do. That too is a \u003cem\u003eCapsicum baccatum, \u003c\/em\u003ebut Doug is a respected and experience pepper farmer and breeder who has been working on this for many years and we trust his memory of the original variety which he worked with.
