Butterfly Pea

Clitoria ternatea

$4.50
Description

What a cool plant! Here's what we learned after finally getting a hold of very hard to find seeds and grew some in our gardens in 2021. They really like heat, humidity, and regular summer rains. Don't bother starting seeds till our weather is like that, cool and dry! We tried early, setting out little transplants because we were super excited, but they literally did nothing except for survive, until it got really warm and the summer rains began and then they were off!

They want to climb, and will grow 10' tall or more! Low to no maintenance they do well in moderate soil with no irrigation other than what Mother Nature provides during the summer. They last a long time with continuous blossoms and a generous seed offering. The delicate blue flowers are very attractive to pollinators.

Dry them or use fresh to make any drink blue or make your own inks and paints from this lovely pigment. Reacts to acid, so if you drop lemon juice into your drink it will turn purple! Does not have much of a taste, just a fun natural dye!

This is a rare Slow Food Ark of Taste crop!

How to grow

For better germination, nick or lightly scar the seed coat and soak the seeds in water for about 6–8 hours before planting.

Plant in full sun and direct sow once the weather is really warm and we're heading into the wet season, usually around May. Transplants do well too. Plant seeds a few inches apart at the base of a trellis, and that's about it!

Butterfly pea thrives in warm weather with consistent rain. Supplemental irrigation may be needed during dry spells. A trellis makes harvesting much easier and gives the vines plenty of room to climb.

How to save seeds

Super easy to save! After the flowers die back, watch for tiny green seed pods that will eventually turn brown. You can harvest when they are starting to turn yellow and feel leathery, if it saves them from being rained on and ruined. Dry further inside, but be careful- they are popping! We covered them with a towel or screen because sometimes they would POOOOF! Explode seeds all over.
