Golden Sweet Pea (pole)

Pisum sativum

$4.50
Description

An heirloom sweet pea we originally got from Seed Savers Exchange at the recommendation of a local gardener many years ago. Seed Savers says the seed was collected from India. Best eaten when young, great in stir fries. Tender pods, with a crisp and mildly sweet flavor. The color of the pods makes them really stand out from the plans and really easy to harvest!

Vining plant needs trellis support.

How to grow

A rule of thumb is to always direct sow root crops and legumes. Direct seed 1" deep, spaced 6" apart. Peas really like cooler weather, so do not plant until all traces of summer heat are gone! This may not be till December or January. Use a soil inoculant to boost harvest if you can. Mix it with the seeds and plant immediately, as inoculant is sensitive to UV light (it lives in the soil). We find that pre-soaking or "priming" our larger seeds like this for 6-12 hours is helpful for better, and more even germination. Most peas want to grow on a trellis, even the dwarfs.

How to save seeds

Peas are an excellent beginner seed-saving project! They are highly self-pollinating, so they are unlikely to cross with other pea varieties in your garden—unless, like us, you have lots of busy bumblebees and carpenter bees visiting your flowers!

Choose a few of your best, healthiest plants and leave some of their plumpest pods on the plant to mature fully. The pods will eventually shrink, shrivel, turn brownish-tan, and dry down right on the plant. Once the pods are completely dry, harvest and shell the seeds.

You can save viable seed from just one plant, but saving from 5–20 plants is better for maintaining genetic diversity and keeping your variety vigorous over time.
