Jewels of Opar

Talinum paniculatum

$4.50
Description

A delicate, low-growing plant with firm yet tender leaves that are tasty and crunchy. It thrives in the heat of summer, producing edible greens alongside loads of tiny purple flowers. It’s both delicious and very ornamental!

This plant does have a tendency to spread around the garden, but we’ve never found it to be particularly weedy. It pops up here and there during the warmest months, and we usually just let it grow where it lands.

It doesn’t seem to compete much with other plants, so unless it’s growing directly in the way, we’re happy to let it do its thing. A lovely little edible ornamental.

How to grow

Sow very shallowly and somewhat thickly to accommodate for naturally lower germination of the tiny seeds, about 12" apart. Seeds can be directly sown into the garden, and will likely self-sow in the garden, if left to go to seed. Transplants also do really well. Jewels of Opar does not like frost to set outdoors when we don't expect any more cold. It seems to do well in partial and full sun.

How to save seeds

Seeds are inside the tiny little round pinkish pods that can be easy to miss- which is how they can end up spreading. Throughout the season as they form, you can simply squeeze the little pods into a bucket, releasing loads of tiny seeds. Or snip entire branches, even if not all the seeds seem ready. Bring them indoors and dry inside a paper bag. The seed pods are explosive and may pop open, throwing seed everywhere, if they are not contained!
