Yukina Savoy

Brassica rapa

$4.50
Description

Similar to the popular Tatsoi, but larger and more ruffled. Very easy to grow during our cooler months and suitable as a spinach substitute due to it's mild flavor when harvested young and similar looking leaves. Recommended by our friends at Siembra Farm because of it's consumer appeal as a "spinach" knock-off that is much easier to grow than real spinach for the average gardener (and us too)!

It will produce seed here which is awesome! The only draw back is that as temperatures warm, it starts to become attractive to beetles and other insects, so leaving it in the field longer for seeds may mean more attention to dealing with insect pressure. The flowers are gorgeous and very attractive to pollinators, as well as being edible.

How to grow

Direct sow or transplant 1/4" deep or less, spaced 10-18" apart. Generally heavy feeders and will always do best in good fertile soil with some occasional organic fertilizers, thick leafy mulch and regular watering if it gets really dry.

How to save seeds

Very easy to save seeds from, but takes longer in the field which risks insect curiosity! Brassicas are very out-crossing which means they prosper when many individuals are flowering at once for good genetic mixing. In fact they often have self-pollinating prevention measures in place. While it is ok for a season or two to save off of a small number of plants, long term genetic viability and crop health will be compromised from this inbreeding. We recommend at least 20 plants flowering to collect seed from. More is better and we often grow at least 80-200+ plants when we grow for seed. If you don't want to do all this work, let them flower for the bees and then cut them back when they are done.
